Trees are messengers of peace and prosperity

In the SERC project, trees are planted using a particular water saving technology called Groasis. This approach includes usage of the Waterboxx, a technology particularly effective in arid areas. Water usage is reduced by 90% compared with traditional tree-planting, using irrigation. A sapling put in the ground using the Waterboxx tends to grow at slower rate in the beginning, but as it develops, it roots itself naturally. It manages to trace humidity more effectively which caters for a sustainable growth-path and greater longevity.

What
is SERC?

SERC stands for Social & Environmental Reforestation Collaboration, or تعاوﻨوا in Arabic – which means working together. It is an afforestation and reforestation program being deployed and developed in close association with local people and organisations. The focus is on Dhofar, in the south of Oman, but the project aims to develop a scalable model that can be applied in other parts of Oman, and in other countries as well. The goals of SERC are to recover lost areas of forestation, reduce desertification, increase soil health, reduce reliance on traditional irrigation practices, increase awareness and implement sustainable land-management practices, open up new opportunities for entrepreneurship and create jobs.
